After her Group One New Zealand 1000 Guineas
victory, Waikato Stud bred and owned DAFFODIL,
by No Excuse Needed, wins the Group One AJC
Oaks, the first New Zealand trained winner
in 19 years. It was also a first for trainer
Kevin Gray – his first visit to Sydney
and what a result for the somewhat mature
new kid on the block. Classic results to add
to another Waikato Stud bred Derby double
this season – MARKUS MAXIMUS for trainer
Peter Moody in the Western Australian Derby
and BETWIXT, by O’Reilly, in the Tasmanian
Derby, the first filly winner in 30 years.

The coveted 'New Zealand Filly
of The Year' and 'Southern Filly of The Year'
Titles are won by Waikato Stud bred and raced
fillies Daffodil and Bird respectively. Waikato
Stud bred O'reilly cold Alamosa capped a notable
career, winning at Group One level every season
he raced, with victory in the Group One Toorak
Handicap at Caulfield. Yet another stallion
prospect bred and sold by Waikato Stud. |

A good habit to get into – win with VIGOR
and celebrate with vim! The O’Reilly gelding’s
connections found an excuse five times in a row
in Melbourne.
Fresh from a Melbourne Cup campaign, GUYNO won the
Perth Cup on New Year’s Day – even more
reason to drink champagne.
Absolutely glamourous Melbourne trainer Danny O’Brien
scored a stakeswinning double with the progeny of
Pins (KEANO and GLAM SLAM) the weekend before his
wedding.
Broodmare superstud Centaine continues to dominate
Australasian tables. MACO’REILLY had a supersize
season for trainer David Haworth and his Levin owners,
adding six wins to his menu culminating in a Group
One double.
FORTIFICATION BODEKA runs a close third at the Kelt
Capital Horse of the Year – in the lead rein
section. |

Last year’s Mercedes Awards Dinner –
wear any colour so long as it’s black. The
Chittick family accept O’Reilly’s prestigious
Dewar and Grosvenor Stallion Awards. It’s
time to spruce up the penguin suits again –
what odds Waikato Stud collecting their fifth Mercedes
NZ Breeder Of The Year Award Prizes already await
BIRD and DAFFODIL as Fillies of the Year and with
nominations in several categories Waikato Stud figures
to be centre stage again. |
