El Segundo Retired (April 6 2010)
Four-time Gr 1 winner El Segundo has been retired after
an illustrious career that spanned six seasons. Time
was called on the eight-year-old's racing days after
he suffered a tendon injury when a last-start fifth
in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.
Trained throughout Caulfield horseman Colin Little,
who rated the son of WS stallion Pins as the best horse
he had prepared, El Segundo's career highlight came
in 2007 when he defeated Wonderful World and Haradasun
in the Cox Plate having finished runner-up the previous
year at Moonee Valley to Fields Of Omagh.
El Segundo also won the Yalumba, Underwood and Orr Stakes
at the top level as well as the Dato Tan Chin Nam, Memsie
and Carlyon Stakes at Gr 2 level and the Listed JRA
Cup. He was successful from 1200 to 2040 metres and,
despite persistent injuries, he won 12 of his 35 starts
and retired with career earnings of nearly $A4 million.
