Savabeel's Stars Shine Brightly (July
20 2010)
Savabeel's stocks continue to rise with the exciting
young WS sire the source of no fewer than four winners
in four days last week. The former Cox Plate hero has
made a grand start to his stallion career with Group
and Listed success both at home and in Australia from
his first two crops to race.
His former trainer Graeme Rogerson, who retains an ownership
interest in the son of Zabeel, struck twice with his
progeny and started the ball rolling with the three-year-old
Sukab last Wednesday. Out of the stakes-winning Just
A Dancer mare Call Me Lily, the gelding was a winner
at Scone in May and repeated the dose under 58.5kg at
Grafton.
Rogerson's double was completed by Queen Sabeel at Ruakaka
on Saturday. Winner of the Listed Northland Breeders'
Stakes last season, she raced close to the pace and
after leading early in the run home defied allcomers
for her third victory in 12 appearances.
Savabeel's two-year-old daughter Lady Kipling has made
an encouraging start to her career and after placings
at her first two outings she broke through in style
at Waverley. Prepared by Murray and Bjorn Baker, she
enjoyed a good run and coasted clear in the straight
to score by two and a-half lengths.
Top Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse is another leading
conditioner to savour Savabeel success. Her three-year-old
filly Avec Mon Ami followed up a maiden success at Goulburn
last month with victory at Kembla Grange at the weekend.
She is out of the Covetous mare With My and was a $A150,000
Sydney Easter Yearling Sale purchase.
Further adding to the Savabeel story was his half-brother
Triumphal Choice who posted his first city when when
he was an impressive winner over 2000 metres at Caulfield
on Saturday. By Redoute's Choice and a $A1 million yearling,
the colt was sidelined by injury for a year but has
now won his last two and is considered a bright spring
prospect by trainer Peter Moody.
