Savabeel Unearths Future Star (April
20 2010)
Waikato Stud sire Savabeel unearthed
a potential star at Royal Randwick on Saturday, when
the Bart Cummings-trained Kudakulari (NZ)
stormed home to win the Listed SHARP Fernhill Handicap
(1600m) at Royal Randwick.
Having just his third raceday start, the strapping
bay overpowered his two-year-old rivals and in the hands
of jockey Luke Nolen made light work of the 1600m feature
to score by a length.
“He’s a really nice horse,” Nolen
said.
“He’s still very raw and new to it all.
I think they’ll have a nice colt come the spring.”
James Cummings, who was on track at Randwick representing
the Cummings stable, reported that the Caulfield Guineas
in the Spring was an ideal future target for the Brown
Thoroughbreds and JML Bloodstock Ltd-bred galloper.
“The Caulfield Guineas would be an ideal race
for this horse, but we will just see how he comes through
this race and he may be nominated for the Gr.1 Champagne
Stakes next weekend,” said Cummings.
Kudakulari (NZ) – which is Indonesian
for “fast horse”, represents the fourth
individual stakes winner for his Zabeel
sire Savabeel, who counts the Australian
stakes winner My Emotion, and the New
Zealand black-type winners Queen Sabeel
and Warrentherooster among his total.
A $140,000 graduate from the Little Avondale Stud draft
at the 2009 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Kudakulari
(NZ) is one of three winning foals from as
many to race from the O’Reilly
mare Oenotria, who is a half-sister
to the dam of the Gr.1 winner Dorabella (NZ),
and the multiple stakes winner in Singapore, Crusoe
(NZ).
Six weanlings, and one two-year-old filly by Savabeel,
will go up for auction at the May 3-5 NZB National
Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Bloodstock Sale at
Karaka.
