Dynamic Duo In Money Again (February
1 2010)
WS and high-profile owner and racing administrator Herbie
Dyke have proved a successful Karaka Million double
act. They joined forces again at Ellerslie on Sunday
with feature juvenile event runner-up Icepin to continue
their profitable association.
The Matamata farm graduate Raid provided Dyke with a
placegetter in the inaugural running of the juvenile
dash in 2008 and Icepin continued the trend yesterday
when a game second. The son of Pins and the O'Reilly
mare Ice Maiden was originally passed in at Karaka last
year after failing to meet his reserve.
His $50,000 price tag wasn't met and Dyke made a post-sale
offer of $40,000 and secured the colt for that price
on the toss of a coin. "Herbie asked me how much
I wanted for him and I said $50,000 - he said I'll give
you $40,000 and I said no so we tossed for it,"
Chittick said. "I lost and it cost us 10 grand
but Herbie's been a good client so good luck to him."
Coincidentally the winner Sister Havana was born and
raised by Waikato Stud and carries the famous 'WS' brand.
