Kudakulari Wins Fernhill Handicap (April 19 2010)

Another impressive stakeswinner for Savabeel headlined an outstanding weekend for WS on both sides of the Tasman. The Bart Cummings-trained Kudakulari overcame a wide passage to win the Listed Fernhill Handicap at Randwick with ease and justify the stable's glowing regard for the colt.

Part-owned by Dato Tan Chin Nam, the son of the Cox Plate winner is now likely to be spelled with the Gr 1 Caulfield Guineas already on the radar for next season. A $140,000 yearling, Kudakulari is out of the O'Reilly mare Oenotria and he showed his appreciation of the 1600 metres on Saturday after placing at both his previous runs.

"It really looks like he's got a big future," said stable foreman and the legendary trainer's grandson James. "He's a very relaxed customer and he's got a lot of talent." Kudakulari is the fourth individual stakeswinner for Savabeel whose daughter Kasturie also won at yesterday's Tamworth meeting in New South Wales.

Savabeel's barn-mate No Excuse Needed was a major force at Trentham where he sired the first two winners on the card. The Kevin Gray-trained Tight Belt capped off a run of consistent form with victory in the opener and southern visitor Flying Alibi, out of an O'Reilly mare, followed up with a winning return from a spell in the next event.

Meanwhile, the WS-bred and sold Frozone maintained his excellent strike rate at Doomben on Saturday for Gold Coast trainer Alan Bailey with his sixth career success from 17 appearances. By dual Gr 1 winner Reset, he is out of the winning O'Reilly mare Ice Maiden and is a half-brother to Gr 3 Taranaki Classic winner Icepin (Pins). Bailey purchased Frozone from WS's 2007 Premier Sale draft at Karaka in 2007 for $200,000.
