Herbie's Coining It With Icepin (January
19 2010)
The spin of a coin went against WS in a deal struck
for promising juvenile Icepin but Mark Chittick isn't
counting the cost. The promising last-start Ellerslie
winner is raced by prominent owner and racing administrator
Herbie Dyke, who secured the youngster after the son
of Pins had failed to meet his reserve at Karaka last
year.
"Herbie asked me how much I wanted for him and
I said $50,000 - he said I'll give you $40,000 and I
said no so we tossed for it," Chittick said. "I
lost and it cost us 10 grand but Herbie's been a good
client so good luck to him."
Icepin secured his place in the Karaka Million with
victory in last Saturday's lead-up event and successfully
followed the same path of another WS-bred and sold runner
to carry the Dyke colours. Raid, also by Pins, won the
prelude before finishing third in the Karaka Million
and further went on to earn a Gr 1 credit when runner-up
in the Ford Diamond Stakes.
